The Jackson County Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2018-19 school year at its meeting Jan. 11, 2018.
“There is no question that this is something of a change for our community,” said Dr. April Howard, superintendent, in describing a calendar that has teachers reporting on July 24 and students returning July 30. “We believe it shows that we value the need for our teachers to have more collaborative time throughout the year and provides an infusion of time for our students and their families to recharge.
“And, as we move toward a more balanced calendar, we believe our students will benefit, losing less ground than is typical with lengthy summer breaks,” she said.
The calendar (below and linked our CALENDAR page) provides time off for students and staff throughout the year, with week-long breaks in early October and late November, nine school days off for students between semesters in December-January, and week-long breaks in February and April. (Update 2/15/17: The February dates have been reserved for potential make-up dates in case of extended weather-related or other unexpected closures; they are marked with asterisks on the calendar.)
In addition to the four days in July, professional learning/teacher workdays are set in September, October, December, January, February, March, and after the last scheduled day for students, May 24, 2019. All but one of those days is connected to a break for students, creating blocks of time for family time that may include travel, field trip activities that might otherwise take away from instructional time, and more flexibility for enrichment activities.
