Elementary school students gave up part of their Saturday snow day to practice for the upcoming Science Olympiad tournament — and got a little snow time, anyway!

Third- through fifth-graders from East Jackson Elementary School, Gum Springs Elementary School, Maysville Elementary School, North Jackson Elementary School and West Jackson Elementary School gathered at Jackson County Comprehensive High School Feb. 8, with EJES and WJES taking first and second place honors, according to Jeremy Peacock, science curriculum coordinator for the school system.

Science Olympiad engages students in 18 different events that challenge their knowledge and skills in science, engineering, and math. JCCHS students and teachers volunteered to host the event, and all five teams will compete in the Northeast Georgia Regional Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament March 21 at North Oconee High School.
