Free meals for all county children begin May 29

UPDATE – June 26, 2018 – Due to a lack of participation, the summer meal service provided by the Jackson County School System to the Oak Grove, Rock Forge and Swan Court areas will be discontinued beginning Monday, July 2.

The last day of meal service at these locations will be Friday, June 29.

Meals will continue to be available at no cost to any Jackson County child 18 years of age and under at the following locations:

* Pleasant Acres, 30 Hale Road, Maysville, arriving at 11 a.m., departing at 11:30 a.m.

* Commerce Library, 1344 S. Broad Street, Commerce, noon-12:30 p.m.

* Heritage Hills, 100 Heritage Hills Drive, Commerce, 12:45-1:15 p.m.

* Fox Chase, 503 Jim David Road, Nicholson, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

* Harold Swindle Public Library, 5466 Highway 441 South, Nicholson, 12:30-1 p.m.

East Jackson Comprehensive High School, 1435 Hoods Mill Road, Commerce, will continue to serve breakfast from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club of Commerce, 45 Ridgeway Street, Commerce, will serve breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.

The program continues Mondays through Fridays through July 20; meals will not be served Wednesday, July 4.


Lunchtime meals – and, in some cases, breakfasts – will be served free of charge for Jackson County children 18 years old and younger beginning Tuesday, May 29, and continuing through Friday, July 20, at 11 locations across Jackson County.

No service will be available July 4.

The no-cost meals must be consumed onsite, and only one meal per child is available, according to Dr. Debra Morris, the Jackson County School System director of school nutrition. Adults who wish to eat will be charged $3.50 per meal.

Breakfast and lunch from the federally-funded initiative, administered by JCSS’s school nutrition program, will be served at East Jackson County Comprehensive High School, 1435 Hoods Mill Road, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., respectively.

Those two meals also will be available at the Boys & Girls Club of Commerce, 45 Ridgeway Street, from 8:30-9 a.m. and noon-12:30 p.m., respectively.

Maysville Baptist Church, 8875 Highway 82 Spur, will provide lunch from 11 a.m. until noon in the fellowship hall.

School buses will provide onboard lunches at stops in the Maysville, Commerce, Nicholson, Athens, and Arcade ZIP codes.

Route 1 has its first stop at Pleasant Acres, 30 Hale Road, Maysville, from 11-11:30 a.m. Next up is the Commerce Library, 1344 S. Broad St., from noon to 12:30 p.m.; then 100 Heritage Hills Drive, from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Route 2 will begin at Fox Chase, 503 Jim David Road, Nicholson, arriving at 11:15 a.m. and departing at 12:15 p.m. Its second stop is at the Harold Swindle Public Library, 5466 Hwy 441 South, Nicholson, from 12:30-1 p.m.

Route 3 begins with a stop at 1944 Oak Grove Road, Athens, from 11:30 a.m.-noon; moves to Rock Forge, 101 White Oak Trail, Arcade, from 12:20 to 12:45 p.m.; and ends at 33 Swan Court, Arcade, serving from 1-1:30 p.m.

The program is part of the Seamless Summer Food Program, which helps fill the summer meal gap for children when national school lunch and school breakfast program meals are not available.
