Dr. April Howard was named superintendent of the Jackson County School System by the Board of Education in 2013, following assignments as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning, as principal at West Jackson Middle School, and as a teacher at WJMS.

She earned an educational doctorate from Liberty University and her master’s and educational specialist degrees from the University of Georgia. She worked in private industry after earning her degree in business from Georgia State University before returning to school to obtain her teaching certification.

She began her teaching career in 1993 at Russell Middle School in Barrow County where she was named System-Wide Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Before returning to the Jackson County district in 2012, Dr. Howard worked in the Hall County School System as a school improvement specialist and in the Jefferson City School System as director of secondary instruction and interim elementary school principal.

She is a member of the Superintendents’ Advisory Council to the Dean of the College of Education at the University of Georgia, the 2017-18 chair of the Board of Control for the Northeast Georgia Regional Educational Services Agency, and 2018-19 chair of the Foothills Charter High School Board of Directors.

She also serves on the Jackson County Board of Health, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and its Economic Development Council, the CPA Board of Control, Peachstate Federal Credit Union’s Supervisory Board, and with various community organizations.

Dr. Howard is the proud mom of two children who attend Jackson County Schools, and she enjoys cycling, hiking, and outdoor activity with her family. She is a member of Galilee Christian Church.
