Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a noncurricular, proactive approach to behavior that emphasizes positive strategies for preventing and responding to problem behavior.

This school-wide prevention strategy has become increasingly popular due to the framework of a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), increasing concern regarding problem behavior in schools, and research supporting the effectiveness of PBIS. This model decreases challenging behavior and promotes a positive school climate.
PBIS promotes a positive school climate and is founded upon behavioral, social learning, and organizational principles that target staff and student behaviors in all school contexts, such as the classroom, hallway, or on the bus. The framework aims to create consistent and effective discipline and reinforcement systems and provide support and training to school staff.
It is estimated that more than 23,000 schools in the United States have received training in school wide implementation, with 44 states developing statewide systems for training.
Research shows that early social and behavior intervention increases academic success and promotes social emotional health, positive peer relationships, and self-discipline. Schools implementing PBIS have consistently reduced office discipline referrals and suspensions by 20-80%, observed increases in positive behavior, and decreased bullying behaviors.
Consistent with our MTSS model, JCSS promotes teaching and acknowledging appropriate behaviors, using data to inform our decision making and select interventions, and using effective and consistent discipline practice to create a cohesive, safe, and positive climate for our staff and students.
It is expected that these universal behavioral strategies will promote success in approximately 80-95% of students.
Targeted small group or individual interventions will be required for approximately 5-15% of the students who do not respond to universal strategies. One to seven percent of the population will require intensive interventions to support their behavioral needs. These services typically involve a family-centered, wraparound approach, which incorporates multiple services, people, and PBIS intensive interventions.
