JCSS Awarded Georgia Reads Grant

JCSS Awarded Georgia Reads Grant

The Jackson County School System has been awarded a Georgia Reads Community Award grant worth $20,000 to further strengthen local literacy initiatives throughout the school system. System leaders were recognized at the Georgia State Capitol on Tuesday, as part of a Georgia Reads Day celebration.

Hosted by the Georgia Council on Literacy, this award highlights the power of sustained community partnerships to improve literacy outcomes throughout the state. To be eligible for the grant, systems had to represent at least three years of demonstrated collaboration and measurable literacy gains.

The Jackson County School System is committed to improving literacy throughout the community. The system implemented Ferst Readers several years ago, a literacy initiative that provides books and resources to families each month with children ages birth to five years old.

As part of being recognized as a Georgia Reads Community Award recipient, JCSS will host children's author Malcolm Mitchell, a former University of Georgia standout and NFL Super Bowl champion, on March 11. Mitchell will read to students and encourage a love of literacy
