Three JCSS Seniors Honored by National Merit Scholarship Program
JEFFERSON — Three high school seniors from the Jackson County School System have earned themselves a place in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
East Jackson Comprehensive High School seniors Charlie Wheeler and Samuel Suarez have both been named National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, while Jackson County High School’s Justin Smith has received a Letter of Commendation.
Wheeler and Suarez, as semifinalists, now have the opportunity to continue toward being one of 7,140 scholarship honorees that will be awarded a combined nearly $28 million in scholarship money.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is based on PSAT scores, and semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state, and the top 16,000 in the nation. A Commended Student receives a Letter of Commendation after scoring in the top 50,000 of the nearly 1.3 million students who take the PSAT exam.
