West Jackson Middle School’s Reading Bowl Team took first place for the second year in a row in the Eastern Regional competition for the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, held in Augusta Feb. 9.
WJMS will move on to compete in the Eastern Division competition at Georgia Southern University March 2, and the top team will advance to challenge the winners of the Western Division during the Children’s Literature Conference at the University of Georgia March 30.
WJMS won the state championship in 2018 and hopes to defend the title in 2019, school officials said. The team is coached by Brittany Bennett and Shelly Salom.
Celebrating — with a good grip on the regional trophy — are, from left, Ally Hanley, Will Stevens, Kendall Brown, Abey Martin and Kellen Salom. Their shirts direct viewers to “Read books, not shirts!”
